What do you actually get, and how often?
The first is a written IT roadmap: what the technology estate looks like now, what needs replacing or upgrading and roughly when, and what that is likely to cost.
Writing it down is most of the value. A plan that lives in one person’s head cannot be handed to a finance director, argued with, or checked afterwards against what actually happened.
The second is a quarterly meeting. The cadence matters more than it looks. Monthly tends to turn strategy into status reporting. Annual means a plan that is stale long before anyone revisits it. A quarter is long enough that something has genuinely changed, and short enough to correct course before a budget cycle closes on an assumption that no longer holds.
Neither of those is hands-on work. Nobody is rebuilding a server in a strategy meeting. The point is that somebody senior is looking at the whole estate on a schedule, rather than technology decisions being made one purchase order at a time by whoever noticed the problem.
